MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a darkly comedic drama that follows the journey of Merritt (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran of Afghanistan. She is at odds with her family over the arrival of her best friend Zoe (Natalie Morales), who died in the military. Despite the persistence of a VA team counselor (Morgan Freeman), the fierce love of her mother (Gloria Ruben), and the indifference of an unexpected boyfriend, Merritt’s cozy and dysfunctional friendship with Zoey isolates them from the world. Until Merritt’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), holed up in the family’s ancestral lake house, begins to lose his way and needs the one thing he refuses to give her… help. This is essentially a buddy movie about a complicated friendship, a divided family, and the complicated ways of dealing with grief.
